CHECK 2012
Moving Toward the Cloud
Migration of a 6-college consortium data center to a virtual hosted platform
Jerry Smith, Russ Francis
Associated Colleges of Central Kansas
6 private colleges located around MCPherson migrated from a standard shared date center to a hosted environment.
They already hosted the data from the colleges at a remote location, so they were already uxed to the hosted environment.
cost to do hosted system - 354K
cost of hardning data center - 447K
consider costs for providing extra capacity when hosting data in-house vs buying just what is needed and buying more as needed.
Things that were learned.
it changes the role of IT and IT staff
relationship building is critical. you need to know who to go to get the job done.
try to reduce the differences in equipment as much as possible.
conclusions
small to medium sized college is "sweet spot" for hosted infrastructure.
capabilities for business continuity of a Tier 4 infrastructure outrweighs cost.

Social Media Roundtable
Presenters: Bonnie Scranton, Linda Newman, Duane Rigsby, Steve Lichtensteiger, Rich Emnett The Ohio State Univ, Jackie Weikert - Penn State, John Dorner - North Carolina Univ.
Info found on Google wave at with:public netc2010
Dan Toland - Ohio State Farm Bureau has written about Social Media
Texas has guidelines at http://agrilifeweb.tamu.edu/us/social/
Penn State has some at http://agsci.psu.edu/communications/web/best-practices/social-media/strategy
eXtension has information that they are streaming out for training and information.
@itweetmeat has excellent info about a lot of misinformation and the correct information.
Should you mix personal and work tweets or facebook info on the same site? You appear to be more rounded if you show the different parts of your life. Often you may get response from people who are outside your regular scene.
If someone requests to friend you how do you decide yes or no? Some people friend people who are friends of friends. Some are very selective.
"If we just apply all the things we should do in other settings, we have to realize we are in a glass house and act accordingly."
An excellent place to put you social settings is in your eXtension profile.
Comments on a blog are left open and the bad ones are overpowered by the good ones.
